Project Manager - Transmission and Substation Projects
The Project Manager will oversee and coordinate substation and transmission line projects. This role involves managing all activities related to cost estimating, property acquisition, material procurement, permitting, construction, testing, and commissioning. The position is crucial in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and adhere to design and construction specifications while meeting or exceeding regulatory requirements. This role reports to the Director of Construction.
Responsibilities
- Manage transmission and substation projects from conception to energization, including preliminary engineering, bidding, negotiations, financial forecasting, material procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Lead project conceptualization efforts, including site selection, layout, design, and configuration based on project goals. Develop detailed cost estimates and schedules to secure project funding.
- Oversee property acquisition, easements, permits, and crossing agreements for new projects.
- Develop contracting strategies for engineering, procurement, and construction services, aligned with project and company goals.
- Prepare comprehensive bid packages to mitigate risks and potential delays or cost overruns.
- Review and analyze proposals and provide award recommendations to the executive team.
- Anticipate and address potential project delays or cost overages by implementing corrective action plans.
- Review and provide feedback on design packages to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Negotiate and review change orders.
- Mentor staff, manage teams, maintain contractor and vendor relationships, and stay updated on industry advancements.
- Update and revise design and construction specifications as needed.
- Secure necessary outages and approve project-related invoicing.
- Lead project update meetings and manage schedules, costs/resources, budgets, and technical objectives.
- Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental standards and policies.
- Travel occasionally to project sites to review progress.
- Transition projects from construction to the operations phase.
- Provide detailed weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting to stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in construction, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering design, project management, material procurement, and construction of large-scale high-voltage transmission and/or substation projects.
- Strong understanding of industry design and construction standards for 138 kV and 345 kV transmission and substation projects.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, AISC, ACI, and OSHA standards.
- Experience with industry consultants, contractors, and material providers.
- Proven ability to negotiate and manage EPC contracts for transmission and substation projects.
- Skilled in planning, scheduling, and coordinating work based on project priorities.
- Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and effective in managing multiple priorities.
- Strong business acumen and decision-making skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to new challenges in a growing organization.
- Experience interfacing with developers to maintain project standing with interconnection stakeholders.
